Dinosaur Trivia
Dinosaurs ruled the prehistoric world millions of years ago, but you might be surprised by how similar they are to modern day animals!
Did you know…
Rulers of Their Kingdoms…
Just like Asian lions rule their kingdom at Dublin Zoo today, the Tyrannosaurus rex was the undisputed ruler of the prehistoric world.
The Original Giraffe?
Brachiosaurus, a towering prehistoric herbivore, used its long neck to reach treetop leaves—just like the Rothschild’s giraffes at Dublin Zoo do today.
A Rhino of the Past?
The Triceratops, like today’s rhinos, used its mighty horns to fend off predators and compete for territory. Its name means “three-horned face”!
Munching Machines…
Did you know Brachiosaurus needed to eat over 400kg of vegetation every day? That’s nearly three times as much as Dublin Zoo’s Asian elephants, who munch through 150kg daily to stay fit and healthy!
Small, Smart, and Grippy…
The Troodon was a small, intelligent, bird-like dinosaur that could grasp objects—just like the squirrel monkeys at Dublin Zoo today!
A Dinosaur with a Shell?
Like modern-day tortoises, Gastonia was built for protection. Its bony armour helped keep it safe from hungry predators!
Masters of the Headbutt…
Both Pachycephalosaurus and mountain goats use their skull power to battle rivals for territory and mates!
Hunters and the Hunted…
One of the earliest dinosaurs, Herrerasaurus, was a swift and skilled predator—but even it had to watch its back! While it hunted smaller reptiles and early mammals, it was also prey for larger predators of its time.

Extinction and Conservation
Learn how you can help make a difference for today’s wildlife!
If dinosaurs could travel through time, what would they tell us?
“Protect your planet! Once a species goes extinct, it’s gone forever!”
Did you know that every euro you spend at Dublin Zoo supports conservation efforts to protect wildlife today?
Why can’t we bring dinosaurs back?
This isn’t possible unfortunately —but we can protect today’s endangered species. Your visit helps Dublin Zoo fund vital conservation efforts both locally and globally.
What’s one thing dinosaurs didn’t have that we do?
A choice. We can choose to protect wildlife and ensure no species meets the same fate. Your visit helps Dublin Zoo fund vital conservation efforts both locally and globally.
What can we do to help?
Reduce the amount of plastic we buy
Reuse items when possible
Recycle any materials that can be used for a new purpose

What happens to the dinosaurs after the event, are they recycled?
At Dublin Zoo, conservation is at the heart of everything we do, and our latest dinosaur exhibition is no exception. Sustainability is front of mind for us with Zoorassic Trail. The animatronic dinosaurs featured in this event are on loan and will be carefully maintained, retouched, and mended by hand by expert teams, ensuring their longevity and reducing the need for new materials.
We are proud that this exhibition does not contribute to any waste from the production and re-use of these dinosaurs. Beyond the dinosaurs themselves, we have taken great care in sourcing natural materials to create an immersive and environmentally responsible experience. From foliage to bark, every element of the exhibit has been thoughtfully chosen with sustainability in mind. We are committed to reusing materials wherever possible, ensuring that nothing goes to waste.
This exhibition reflects Dublin Zoo’s ongoing commitment to conservation, not just in protecting wildlife and habitats but also in minimising our environmental footprint in every aspect of our work.
-
Is Zoorassic Trail a sensory-friendly experience?
Dublin Zoo is committed to creating an inclusive and enjoyable experience for all visitors. We understand that some guests may have sensory sensitivities, and we are currently working with specialist advisors to assess the sensory impact of Zoorassic Trail.
As part of this, we are developing a Sensory-Friendly Map to help parents, caregivers, and individuals plan their visit in advance. This will highlight:
- Areas with higher sensory stimulation (such as loud dinosaur roars or movement).
- Quieter zones for breaks and sensory regulation.
- Information on sound levels, lighting, and interactive elements.
Once our sensory assessment is complete, we will share detailed guidance on dublinzoo.ie and resources will be included in all booking confirmation emails. If you have any specific questions before your visit, please contact us, and our team will be happy to assist you.
-

The welfare of our animals has been the highest priority since day one of planning for Zoorassic Trail. There’s nothing more important than ensuring we’ve been respectful to our animals and their wellbeing. As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining excellent standards of animal welfare here at Dublin Zoo, we have been monitoring the animals in our care throughout the Zoorassic Trail project.
Working in close collaboration with our dedicated Animal Care Team, the Conservation & Science Team have been undertaking daily behavioural observations, taking an evidence-based approach to ensuring every animal’s welfare is assessed and considered across every phase of the Zoorassic Trail project.

-
How close to the dinosaurs will I able to get?
Zoorassic Trail dinosaurs at Dublin Zoo are life-sized and incredibly realistic, so you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time! While you can get thrillingly close, remember—these giants deserve respect. Crossing the line could disturb our dinosaurs (and will alert our staff!). Just like real wildlife, it’s important to keep a safe distance and admire them without touching. After all, would you really want to get too close to a T.rex?
-
Can I enter the dinosaur habitats?
Our dinosaurs are very sensitive to intruders! Parents and guardian of children and teenagers under 18, we ask for your safety (and to keep our dinosaurs happy), please stay behind the barriers and enjoy them from the viewing areas. We will get you closer than ever to the world’s biggest dinosaurs, but beware, they’re bigger, they’re better and they’re HUNGRIER than ever!
-
Are there ride-on dinosaurs?
Have you ever ridden on a triceratops? At Zoorassic Trail, you’ll be given a chance to ride on a triceratops AND to climb inside a giant egg! However, if an item isn’t suitable for play – we ask that you keep a safe distance and observe the instructions on the on-site signage. Stay in the safe zone – these dinosaurs really don’t take kindly to unexpected visitors!
