It’s back! A brand new series of The Zoo is returning to the small screens, tonight, March 28 at 7pm on RTÉ One, and there are ten brand new episodes to enjoy this season!

There are amazing new stories, new animals and plenty of new drama from behind the scenes at Dublin Zoo.

Some highlights of what viewers can look forward to in this coming season include:

  • It has been several years since penguin chicks were born at Dublin Zoo so when a pair of healthy looking eggs are discovered by Eddie O’Brien and his team they are challenged with a decision whether or not to hand-rear the young chicks
  • Last year love blossomed when Brazilian tapirs Marmaduke and Rio met for the first time, and it didn’t take long for Rio to become pregnant. Since then zookeeper Susan O’Brien has been keeping a close eye on her and there is more than a little excitement around the tapir house as her delivery date approaches
  • When a Californian sea lion pup is born mother and pup soon develop a close bond and viewers are given a bird’s-eye view of their relationship as mum introduces the young sea lion to water for the first time
  • A hand-reared female gorilla joins the troop in the Gorilla Rainforest. The animal care team will go through a long and careful process to introduce to the other western lowland gorillas, but only time will tell how they will react to the new arrival
  • There is great excitement when new pups are born in the meerkat habitat. It isn’t long before these entertaining little creatures are learning life skills from their parents
  • Budi the young male elephant is growing bigger and stronger by the day, but when he begins to get too boisterous with the female elephants keepers are forced to make some difficult decisions
  • Meanwhile, a bull elephant arrives in Dublin Zoo. How will the huge Asian elephant get on with his new herd of female admirers?
  • Keeper Brendan Walsh leaves Dublin Zoo for the forests of Borneo to visit critically endangered orang utans in the wild and discovers a whole new world of wildlife on the way
