A Million Reasons to Celebrate for Dublin Zoo!

Tuesday, 03 January 2012

We are delighted to announce Dublin Zoo welcomed over 1 million visitors through the gates in 2011. This is the first time in the colourful 180 year history of the Zoo that over 1 million people have visited Ireland’s best loved attraction.

The last 12 months witnessed the highest ever footfall and over 37,000 more visitors than the previous record set in 2010 when 963,053 visited.

Leo Oosterweghel, director of Dublin Zoo said, “We are absolutely thrilled with reaching 1 million visitors and we would like to thank all our friends and supporters, old and new, who helped us achieve this incredible milestone. I am delighted to be able to say for the second year in a row that the Zoo is more popular than ever before.

“Our wonderful success can be attributed to the dedication and hard work of the team at Dublin Zoo, who continuously strive to enhance the  habitats and development of all the animals in the Zoo while at the same time ensuring that visitors have an unforgettable experience which is value for money. I am extremely proud to be in a position to say that after a decade of continuous development that Dublin Zoo is now amongst the best Zoos in the world and is Ireland’s top visitor attraction.”

2011 was an extremely busy year and saw the opening of the Gorilla Rainforest, proudly sponsored by Freddy Fyffes and opened by President McAleese in September. Dublin Zoo welcomed no fewer than 42 new arrivals in the last 12 months including two baby gorillas, a hippo and giraffe calf and two red-panda cubs.

In 2011 the extremely popular TV show “The Zoo” aired on RTE 1 and increased marketing, public relations and social media activity contributed hugely to the success of Dublin Zoo. The record breaking numbers are even more remarkable when set against the backdrop of declining consumer confidence and spend and the fact the Zoo had restricted opening times in the busy month of May during the high profile State visits.

We would like to thank all of our visitors for the continued support and for helping us reach one millions visitors during 2011. For 2012 and beyond, we will continue to develop our offering, further enhance the visitor experience and ensure visitors continue to receive the best value for money.

The Barrett family from the Navan Road in Dublin were the 1 millionth visitors to Dublin Zoo. To celebrate, they were given a five-year family pass and a VIP tour of the Zoo where they met the keepers and got exclusive behind the scenes access.
