Dublin Zoo Welcomes Autumn Arrivals - New Season, New Babies

Thursday, 15 September 2011

Dublin Zoo is excited to announce the arrival of three new additions – a hippopotamus calf and two red panda cubs.

Hippopotamus
On Monday 12th September, mum Heidi gave birth to a fit and healthy 30kg female hippo calf. This is the first hippo calf to be born at Dublin Zoo in 10 years.

Dublin Zoo would like to invite fans to suggest names for the hippo calf based on her African origin. To be in with the chance of winning an annual family pass Dublin Zoo are asking people to post suggestions on our facebook.

Team-leader Helen Clarke-Bennet said, “We are thrilled with the arrival of the hippo calf. Mum Heidi is taking to motherhood very well. Before she goes for her daily nap in the pool she lifts the baby out of the water and places the young calf onto the water bank. Then she props the baby onto her nose to make sure the youngster doesn’t fall into the pool while she is sleeping. It’s a joy to see Heidi taking good care of her young calf.”

Red Panda
Two red panda cubs, one male and one female, were born at the beginning of August but have only recently ventured out of the den. From the time they were born their mother, Angelina, kept moving the cubs to different hiding places around the habitat to keep them protected.

Team Leader Eddie O’Brien said, “We are delighted with the arrival of the cubs. They are both doing very well and starting to fend for themselves. Visitors should now be able to spot them roaming around in their habitat.”

Both the hippo and red panda babies are out and about in their habitats so get down to Dublin Zoo and catch a glimpse of them while they are still tiny.
