Dublin Zoo announces Freddy Fyffes as sponsor of the new Gorilla Rainforest

Thursday, 01 September 2011

Dublin Zoo is delighted to announce that international tropical produce importer and distributor Fyffes has signed a major sponsorship agreement, under their Freddy Fyffes brand, to become exclusive sponsors of the new world class Gorilla Rainforest, which will open on Wednesday 28th September 2011.  The agreement also includes sponsorship of the neighbouring Chimpanzee Island.

The Gorilla Rainforest proudly sponsored by Freddy Fyffes, which cost in the region of €3 million to develop, is the biggest and most exciting development undertaken by Dublin Zoo in a number of years. It is 12,000 square metres of wonderful undulating forest which reflects the natural habitat of these magnificent animals and enhances the lives of Dublin Zoo’s breeding troop of western lowland gorillas.

The partnership between Freddy Fyffes and Dublin Zoo is a perfect fit for both companies. This sponsorship is part of Fyffes overall strategy to promote healthy eating for people of all ages and enables the tropical produce distributors to do it in a fun and engaging way. By working with Dublin Zoo, Fyffes hope to inspire children to choose a healthy snack like Freddy Fyffes bananas as opposed to less nutritious snacks. Furthermore bananas are a healthy and enjoyable treat for western lowland gorillas. The sponsorship by Freddy Fyffes is crucial to finance such vital developments at Dublin Zoo.

Leo Oosterweghel, Director at Dublin Zoo commented, “This is a really exciting time for everyone at Dublin Zoo and we are thrilled to welcome Freddy Fyffes to the Gorilla Rainforest family.

“This is one of the biggest sponsorships Dublin Zoo has ever acquired and is a big boost for us as we strive to make vital infrastructural improvements. The sponsorship revenue will contribute to the care of the gorillas, running costs and further development of the Gorilla Rainforest.

“Western lowland gorillas are beautiful animals and the spacious habitat we have created will provide the gorillas with a home to allow the troop continue breeding and to encourage natural behaviours. The Gorilla Rainforest proudly sponsored by Freddy Fyffes will be regarded as one of the world’s best homes for gorillas.”

Emma Crewe, Multiple Marketing Manager at Fyffes said, “Freddy Fyffes is delighted to be working in partnership with Dublin Zoo and the Gorilla Rainforest and Chimpanzee Island. The new Gorilla Rainforest will be a must-see attraction for families and children and it is a fantastic opportunity for us to be a part of such a memorable, positive family experience. Dublin Zoo is Ireland’s best loved and most visited attraction and we are delighted to support Dublin Zoo with this vital development.”

The Gorilla Rainforest proudly sponsored by Freddy Fyffes is 12,000 square metres of rolling topography, rocky outcrops, streams and dense vegetation. This natural environment will allow the gorillas to forage and also move to private resting places away from fellow gorillas and zoo visitors. Visitors to Dublin Zoo will be in for an amazing experience and will see an unrivalled example of gorillas in a natural habitat with observation points hidden along the forest paths to allow visitors to observe the animals.

The Gorilla Rainforest proudly sponsored by Freddy Fyffes will be opened by President McAleese on 28th September 2011.
