Ambassador celebrates Chinese New Year in Dublin Zoo

Monday, 31 December 2007

Dublin Zoo welcomed the Chinese Ambassador, Liu Biwei, who visited in February as part of the Chinese New Year Celebrations.

The Ambassador was greeted by members of staff and Zoo Keepers, who hosted a tour of the Zoo. One of the highlights of the tour was a visit to the striking Red Pandas, which originate from China. The Ambassador also visited other Asian species, including Dublin Zoo's much loved elephants, where he was particularly impressed with the Kaziranga Forest Trail.

Following the tour, the Ambassador and other guests joined Dublin Zoo staff for an Asian themed lunch in the surrounds of the Meerkat restaurant.

Declan Hayden, Community Development Co-ordinator, Dublin City Council said:

“Dublin City Council is delighted to be working in collaboration with Dublin Zoo this year, as part of the Chinese New Year Festival. The wealth of knowledge stemming from nature is so valuable and has a very important, integral role in assisting various nationalities to share aspects of their heritage and culture, and discover more about the many native animals from their own countries living in Dublin Zoo”.
