Rhino Weekend

Thursday, 28 May 2009

Zuki, our white rhinoceros, celebrates her first birthday this week! To mark Zuki’s birthday celebration, staff at Dublin Zoo have organised a special Rhinoceros Weekend which will see a host of family festivities taking place over the bank holiday weekend.

Speaking at the Zoo today, team leader Helen Clarke said; “Zuki is a real character. From day one she presented herself as an independent and fun loving calf. Her mother Ashanti absolutely adores her and she is so playful that visitors usually come for a look and end up staying to watch her bound around and play with her family.”

Helen continued; “Zuki’s a great testament to our breeding programme in place here and we wanted to mark her first birthday with a Rhino weekend, and also as a bit of fun we have ordered a special Rhino cake for the staff and keepers to enjoy!”

Visitors to the Zoo this weekend will be treated to rhino talks throughout the weekend given by the keepers, who work with these endangered animals on a daily basis and will be on hand to share their wealth of knowledge about the Rhino species. These talks will take place Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 11.30am and again at 3pm.

The Zoo also promises a host of fun activities including face-painting for children, which is free of charge, so youngsters can choose from a range of animals including the Rhino of course!
Character ‘Ruairi the Rhino’ will also be on hand for photos with visitors at 3pm.

Normal admission rates apply.

Visitors to the Zoo can see the Zuki on the African Plains and soon in the African Savanna.
