A Record Breaking Year at Dublin Zoo

Thursday, 20 January 2011

Dublin Zoo is celebrating record breaking numbers in 2010 as 963,053 visitors passed through the gates. This is the highest ever footfall in the 180 year history of the Zoo and is a whopping 31,187 more visitors than the previous record year in 2008.

Leo Oosterweghel, director of Dublin Zoo said, “We are absolutely delighted with the record breaking visitor numbers and I would like to thank all our friends and supporters, old and new, who helped us set this new record. Our incredible success can be attributed to the dedication and hard work of the team at Dublin Zoo, who continuously strive to enhance the welfare of all the animals in the Zoo, and to ensure visitors have an unforgettable experience.

“I am extremely proud to be in a position to say that after a decade of development and improvements that Dublin Zoo is now amongst the best Zoos in the world and one of Ireland’s top visitor attractions. To increase visitor numbers by almost 10 since 2009, particularly in a recession, and to break our all time visitor numbers proves that Dublin Zoo offers a superb visitor experience and provides value for money.”

Some of the major highlights in 2010 included a host of births, among them were eight Chilean flamingo chicks, four red river hoglets, a leopard tortoise, two Sulawesi crested macaques, a white crowned mangabey, a new kid on the block at the Family Farm, a Rothschild giraffe calf and southern white rhino calf! The Family Farm was opened in 2010 along with the redevelopment of the penguin habitat.

2011 kicks off to an exciting start with series 2 of The Zoo tv series going to air on RTE starting Friday 4th February and running for 10 weeks. There will also be major developments taking place including a world-class Gorilla Rainforest, a bull elephant house and as the year goes on we hope to announce more new arrivals!
