Winning name for rhinoceros calf announced ahead of Rhino Awareness Weekend

Dublin Zoo is delighted to announce that the newest addition to its rhino herd has been named Zuko. Following the birth of the southern white rhinoceros calf in August, Dublin Zoo asked the public to suggest a name for the newborn based on its African origin. Zuko, which is means ‘harmony’ in African, was suggested by Grace Dowling.

Furthermore, to mark World Rhino Day, Dublin Zoo has announced a host of informative and fun-filled activities taking place this weekend which aim to educate visitors on rhinos and the threats they face in the wild.

Over the two-day event, visitors can join Zoo Keepers for special talks to learn more about the work of Dublin Zoo’s conservation partner, Save the Rhino, who are based in Zimbabwe. Other activities include a rhino trail with facts and statistics incorporated throughout the route, rhino themed arts and crafts including rhino stamps, tattoos, nail art and rhino face painting! Visitors are also invited to stop by Camp Congo where they can learn about the diet and anatomy of a rhino.

Dublin Zoo financially supports the conservation organization Save the Rhino, who are based in Zimbabwe and help protect rhinos from poachers.
