Sealed with a Kiss

Thursday, 26 June 2008

Dublin Zoo is pleased to introduce another very special new arrival - a sealion pup.

The birth took place on Monday 9th June 2008 during the night. The pup has been monitored since birth and appears to be healthy and active.

Mother Ciara, who is almost 12 years old, came to Dublin Zoo in 1997 from Rotterdam Zoo. She has given birth to six pups since arriving here in Dublin.

The little sealion, which is as yet unnamed, weighed in at 7kgs and is settling into her new family, along with father Danny and sister Leah very well. This new arrival makes a total of 5 sealions here at the Zoo.

Speaking at the Zoo earlier today, Eddie O’Brien, Head Keeper at Dublin Zoo said,

With proud mother Ciara

“We are delighted for Ciara to have a new sealion pup, it is also great for father Danny as he was born here at Dublin Zoo. The arrival of Ciara from Rotterdam Zoo as part of our breeding programme has proved very successful.”

Eddie added:

“The next few days will be very important as the pup cannot swim yet, so Ciara will play a crucial role in teaching the new pup to swim. We expect her to be swimming within the next few days, so we will have the arm bands ready!”

The sealion pup can be seen, alongside her mother Ciara, at the Fringes of the Artic in Dublin Zoo from Today. Visitors will get the chance to hear new and unusual sounds from sealion exhibit, as mother and pup yelp to each other.

Visitors to the Zoo will be able to see the new sealion calf, alongside her mother Ciara, at the Fringes of the Artic in Dublin Zoo from today.
