It's a Boy!

Thursday, 08 February 2007

At exactly 5.27am on Sunday 17th February Asian elephant Yasmin's 22 month wait came to an end when she gave birth to an 80kg bull elephant calf.

Keepers were more than prepared for this latest arrival having welcomed Asha, the female elephant calf, born in Dublin Zoo in May 07.

Speaking at the Zoo, Paul O'Donoghue Assistant Zoo Director said:

“We are all so delighted. It's quite extraordinary that we are now welcoming our second elephant calf at Dublin Zoo in just nine months. We now have a real family group representing both sexes and a variety of ages. The bonding process is great to watch!”

The team at Dublin Zoo are delighted to report that the calf suckled well from the outset and he has been given a warm welcome by the other members of the herd. His sister Anak is taking a very strong maternal role alongside their mother Yasmin and the whole herd is being very protective of the new addition. Asha is learning to adapt to her new role in the group, as she is no longer the baby. Keepers suspect that Asha is looking forward to playing with the new arrival in the coming weeks!

Visitors to the Zoo will be able to see the calf and the other elephants, mother Yasmin, 17, Bernhardine, 24, Anak, 4 and Asha, 9 months, in The Kaziranga Forest Trail.

Dublin Zoo is running its own competition to name the new calf. If you would like to help us to find a suitable Asian name for our little bull-we want to hear from you today.
