Lory (Yellow-backed)

Lory (Yellow-backed)

Lóraí cabach droimbhui

  • Scientific name: Lorius garrulous flavopalliatus
  • IUCN status: Endangered
  • Habitat: Moluccan Islands, Indonesia – tropical forests
  • Diet: Herbivore – nectar, pollen, fruit, berries, insects

These engaging, playful, agile and colourful birds have become increasingly endangered over the past few decades because their habitat is rapidly being destroyed and they suffer from human exploitation for the benefit of the cage- bird trade. Their long, brush-like tongue is ideal for reaching into flowers to collect their favourite nectar.

Keeper’s Secret

Yellow-backed chattering lories tend to be messy defecators ... so we find it’s wise not to stand too close!
