An exciting position has arisen for a General Curator to join the Dublin Zoo team.     This is a key appointment and the successful candidate will have the required experience and vision necessary to help Dublin Zoo maintain and improve its standing in the world zoo community.

Reporting to the Director of Dublin Zoo, the successful candidate will be responsible for delivering the Zoos strategic objectives and overall management for the living collection of animals and plants, conservation, research and veterinary services. 

She/he will support the senior staff within these disciplines, maintain and develop interdepartmental communication and continue to provide a high degree of motivation and enthusiasm to allow them to reach their maximum potential.

Administrative duties will include provision of information and updates to the Director, HR, payroll and health and safety records

The successful candidate must have at least 10 years’ experience in the care and management of living collections in a medium/large sized modern zoological garden/ or wildlife park, including international experience.  5 years’ experience must be in a relevant managerial position and can demonstrate a proven ability to provide leadership and support to skilled teams in a changing environment.

A 3rd level qualification in an appropriate discipline, e.g. Zoology or other wildlife related science, is desirable.

The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of Zoo’s ethics, research, education programs and conservation involvement and be an excellent communicator with the ability to deal with external organisations e.g. Government, non-government, unions, sponsors and media.

Curator of Horticulture

DUBLIN ZOO holds the prestigious position of being ‘Ireland’s leading Fee Paying Family Attraction’ welcoming in excess of 1.1 million visitors each year.

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated Curator of Horticulture who will be responsible for advising Dublin Zoo on all horticultural matters relevant to the safe and efficient working of the zoo as well as providing leadership and direction to our highly experienced Horticulture Team.

Reporting to the Assistant to the Director, Dublin Zoo, the Curator of Horticulture will be responsible for the overall day to day management of the Horticultural Department providing support and expertise to enhance the services provided by the department to other departments within the zoo, ensuring world’s best practice, and enhancing the Zoo’s influence and reputation with the public and also within the wider horticultural community.

The successful candidate must possess excellent leadership and communication skills and have a passion for delivering high standards.

An understanding and knowledge of health and safety practices within a modern zoo or garden is essential and a keen interest in natural habitats or ecology, and awareness of the thematic approach to zoo habitat creation as an immersion experience is desirable.

Candidates will have a minimum of 5 years experience working within a similar sized zoological or botanical garden and / or wildlife park, with proven track record of management in a variety of horticultural environments.

At a minimum, candidates must hold a degree in Horticulture or Botany in a recognised educational establishment.  An additional qualification in a natural history related topic such as ecology, zoology, conservation etc., would be advantageous.

This will be night work (no later than 10.30pm), with a few daytime shifts available.  Previous event experience is critical, the short term contract will be for 9 weeks & may result in further opportunities in 2019.
