Orang utan Awareness Week and Samboja Lestari - Dublin Zoo is Ireland's most popular visitor attraction, and welcomed almost one million visitors last year.

Orang utan Awareness Week and Samboja Lestari

Dublin Zoo hosted an Orang utan Awareness Week from the 7th to 14th November 2010, culminating in a big weekend event. Throughout the weekend there were extra keeper talks, display board in the orang utan house with video footage of orang utans in the wild, and face-painting and mask-making for children. The event also generated huge PR which helped spread the word about the plight of the orang utans.

Overall, €10,000 was raised and this money was sent to a project called Samboja Lestari. This project is involved with regenerating rainforest with an estimated population of over 200 orang utans. The rehabilitation centre at Samboja Lestari prepares orang utans for release. Unfortunately, there are many orang utans with transmittable diseases and cannot be released so they are housed on islands within the regenerated rainforest.
